Description
Here is Alaska's state bird, the Willow Ptarmigan, showing off its spring plumage on a cliffside - the North face of Ptarmigan Peak, as it happens - in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. You often cannot see these birds until you're about to step on them, at which point they will loudly squawk and take flight, startling the wits out the unwary Alaska hiker! You can see several of their unique features in this photo, including large, down-covered legs and feet, well-adapted to cold and snow, and of course their plumage which changes throughout the year for incredibly effective camouflage.
