Description
The oldest known living organism in the entire world is a bristlecone pine in California, which is still alive and almost five thousand years of age! Here is probably a much younger specimen, which is no longer living, in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. But bristlecone grows extremely slowly, and the wood is so dense and durable at these altitudes that it doesn't quite decay like other vegetation, but rather only slowly erodes. Perhaps this small, lone sentinel lived for centuries in its high granite crevice, and died ages ago when the Ute indians still commanded this landscape. After all this time, it's still seemingly pointing to Pikes Peak. I like to imagine it's been doing so since long before the mountain acquired the name it now bears.
