I love this. So much beauty under the glittering stars.

Tim Newton replied:

Thank you, Kim! I haven't gotten out much lately. Winter simplifies the scenery, but complicates the rest!! :-)

Tim....I'm living in a flat boring country and the last 10 years we hardly have winters anymore. No wonder i'm looking at your work with great interest. Mountains, snow, stunning skies....i have to put Alaska on my to-do list. The image is breathing serenity and looks so peaceful. Stunning work, Tim!

Tim Newton replied:

Haha!! Yes, I lived in flatlands for awhile, and the first few years it was extremely disconcerting to step outside & see nothing on the horizon. I felt naked, or something. When I moved back home to Alaska, I remember such a rush of appreciation for the surroundings of mountains & water. Here's wishing you good luck in checking that one off your to-do list! Send me a note when you're coming. I could possibly take you on a dayhike/photowalk around the Anchorage area.

Artist's Description

Here is False O'Malley mountain (center) in Alaska's Chugach Mountains, seen one very frosty moonless midnight (-17F) in January, 2017. To the right of the peak, you can just make out the snowy spindrift being lofted back into the sky by the North wind. I had to keep every square centimeter of skin covered, to avoid frostbite. Only two tiny slits in my facemask were left to see through, and I was wishing I could make them narrower still!

I wasn't expecting to get two shots I'd like so well. My intention this night was merely to test whether I had finally devised a tripod and shooting setup I could entirely manage without removing my gloves. This test proved I had done so. Yay! But I really just wanted to stay huddled in my layers and shuffle back down the mountain to the trailhead.

This image is rendered with very course film-like grain. See also the black and white rendition of this same shot.

About Tim Newton

Tim Newton

I am a lifelong Alaskan (except for a few years "outside") perpetually enthralled with Alaska's unique natural beauty. I carry a camera, lenses, and tripod about on frequent treks throughout the Alaska wilderness, often in the Chugach Mountains near my home. I am mostly drawn to conventional landscape photography - subject, light, composition, and color. Occasionally I'll get the opportune shot of wildlife as I trek about, and sometimes - but infrequently - I travel outside Alaska, where of course my camera accompanies me. :-) I am always updating images here from recent treks, and look forward to seeing you here again soon! Best wishes! Tim Newton
