Artist's Description
This is Alaska's state bird, the Willow Ptarmigan, in its white winter plumage. I came across this beautiful creature one early winter day, while circumnavigating a mountain named "The Wedge" in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. Ptarmigans are amazingly well camouflaged, and they often remain very still as you walk by, so can be difficult to spot. But when they decide to bolt, they let loose with a cacophony of their signature warbles - or should I call them "screams". It's certain to give you heart palpitations the first hundred or so times it happens to you! :-)

About Tim Newton

I am a lifelong Alaskan (except for a few years "outside") perpetually enthralled with Alaska's unique natural beauty. I carry a camera, lenses, and tripod about on frequent treks throughout the Alaska wilderness, often in the Chugach Mountains near my home. I am mostly drawn to conventional landscape photography - subject, light, composition, and color. Occasionally I'll get the opportune shot of wildlife as I trek about, and sometimes - but infrequently - I travel outside Alaska, where of course my camera accompanies me. :-) I am always updating images here from recent treks, and look forward to seeing you here again soon! Best wishes! Tim Newton
