Description
Here is my late autumn camp in the backcountry of Alaska's Chugach Mountains. You can see winter closing its steely grip upon this land. This shot is about 30 minutes before sunset, when this singular patch of blue sky opened up through the day-long skies of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. The rest of the sky was black with squalls and threatening squalls. At midnight I looked out of my tent to see two inches of new snow everywhere around me. I came into the backcountry over the high pass you can see in the center of the frame, but that got snowed in while I was here, so had to leave via a lower, still passable route.
This was my single overnight hike for all of 2015, for various reasons, including feet/back injuries, scheduling inconveniences, and just plain old age. I'm definitely slowing down. In this trip, I did not quite reach the limits of my abilities, but I definitely reached the limits of what I cared to endure.
I came back with around 700 frames from my three-day solo trek, and am really delighted with some of the images I captured. I'll be looking forward to sharing more of them here in the days ahead. :-)
