Here's Whittier, Alaska, and Passage Canal, as seen one fine summer day in 2009 from the upper slopes of Mt. Maynard (the mountain through which the Whittier Tunnel passes).
I've only been up here once. I was planning to entirely circumnavigate Mt. Maynard that day, but got turned around on Maynard glacier, not coming prepared to tempt fate across snow-covered crevasses. So instead I decided to climb and cross the East face of the mountain, and come down on the South side. Coming down, however, I kept getting cliffed out, and around 5:30 pm finally decided I had to re-trace my steps if I was going to get back safely. So I re-climbed the mountain and came back down on Maynard Glacier at the North side. For me, it was harrowing in a number of places, and I don't really recommend it as a hike. But I'm glad to have this photo for my trouble! :-)

I am a lifelong Alaskan (except for a few years "outside") perpetually enthralled with Alaska's unique natural beauty. I carry a camera, lenses, and tripod about on frequent treks throughout the Alaska wilderness, often in the Chugach Mountains near my home. I am mostly drawn to conventional landscape photography - subject, light, composition, and color. Occasionally I'll get the opportune shot of wildlife as I trek about, and sometimes - but infrequently - I travel outside Alaska, where of course my camera accompanies me. :-) I am always updating images here from recent treks, and look forward to seeing you here again soon! Best wishes! Tim Newton
