Here is Ship Lake in Alaska's Chugach Mountains. On a clear summer day, it can be warm enough to tempt a swim. But as winter closed in here, the blowing sleet kept sticking to my lens and stinging my eyes. I got chillier at every photo stop. An hour after this shot was taken, I crawled under the overhang of a glacial erratic on the far side of the lake, rested out of the wind, debated turning around, ate a bit of lunch, and put on another layer.
